About ‘Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius
Meditations literally that which is to himself is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the second book was written at Carnuntum.

Reseñas

Ver todo

This book took me much longer to read than I expected, not because it was difficult, but because I kept stopping to underline, reflect, and make notes. I don’t always read for entertainment. Sometimes I read to learn, and Meditations was exactly that kind of book. What amazed me most is how similar the human mind remains despite the centuries between us. In so many of Marcus Aurelius’ thoughts, I could see myself. The fears, the motivations, the inner struggles, they feel timeless. It’s incredible to witness how philosophical thinking evolves, yet continues to circle around the same fundamental questions of purpose, discipline, and meaning. If you enjoy philosophy and observing how human thought changes while remaining deeply familiar, this book is for you. Short, powerful, and full of wisdom. A small book with so much to say.
