Descripción

Queenie Jenkins navigates the complexities of life as a young Jamaican British woman in London, where the lines between her heritage and the modern world blur. At 25, she faces the pressures of relationships, mental health, and identity in a city that often feels overwhelming. Her journey takes readers through her personal struggles, marked by heartbreak and reconciliation, as she seeks to understand herself amid societal expectations.

As Queenie attempts to balance her cultural roots with her desires for independence, she encounters a series of challenges that shape her character and outlook. With humor and candor, her story unfolds, revealing the nuances of her experiences and the resilience required to stand tall in a bustling metropolis. Carty-Williams crafts a vivid portrait of a young woman on the brink of self-discovery, bringing to light the importance of community, love, and self-acceptance.

The audiobook is 9hrs and 45 mins long. It's full of near-constant whining and horrifically bad decisions, until the last 45 minutes when you suddenly empathise with the character and everything is "resolved".I really, really wanted to love this book. I've seen so many great reviews, but it was a hard slog to finish. I only finished it because I wanted to give the author a chance. A lot of the story felt like a convenient afterthought. Also, how the main character still has a job is beyond me - they're "distracted" for 6 months, half-arses everything, leaves early, arrives late and always making mistakes.
