The Beating
That night, Jonathan waited on the corner where Flossy came every time she finished a job. He did not have to wait long until a carriage pulled up. It was Baxter again and the two seemed to have been quarreling.
“I will have me money now, Mr. Baxter.” Flossy demanded, her voice not slurred like usual.
“Why? We did not get anything done tonight, did we?” Baxter snarled at her. “If I wanted to just fight and not get any service, I could have stayed home.”
“Having trouble with the little lady already, eh? Well, nothing like the trouble you would have if I was to tell her everything I knew about you. I will have me money now, and I will thank you to keep your distance from me, and my family from now on. I have gotten some questions about you they are going to be answered tonight; an you may find yourself in worse trouble than you have ever been, Mister.”
“What do you mean? What questions?”
“I have gotten an appointment to find out everything about you. That is what and when I do, you will be sorry you did what you did?”
Jonathan wished it were true. He knew Flossy was talking about the séance that she suspected would reveal Baxter as the murderer. Jonathan knew though that if the ghosts gathered around the Ouija board and started talking, it was he who would be in big trouble – not Baxter.”
He made his move when Baxter drove off with a curse and a final shout, “I do not know what you are talking about, you crazy, drunk”
Flossy turned to see Jonathan stepping out of the shadows. She gave a little cry of fright when she saw him. She did not suspect him of murder, but she felt that he was definitely an odd boy that she did not want to spend much time with at all.
