"The main part of this book tells the story of a bitter, community destroying strike.The strike is provoked by the company in hopes of ousting the union. They expect a quick victory after hiring permanent replacement workers. But the union turns the strike into a cause, inspiring its members and winning allies all over the country. With a union civil disobedience campaign underway, company officials decide to negotiate a settlement. However, the strike is lost when a replacement worker is killed crossing the picket line. Three union leaders are subsequently tried for conspiracy under the RICO Act.
