The Big Thicket

Set in East Texas in the 1870s, the novel (based on real events) is a tale of people in the wildest part of the American frontier, the Big Thicket, during an era when some marriages were against Texas law because of legalized racial bigotry. But there were those who resisted the law in spite of the personal cost. There’s Lucius Simmons, an ex-slave, and the woman he loves who struggle to find a preacher willing to marry a mixed-race couple. There is Tim, a white man who is determined to be with the beautiful black Magnolia. And there are murders and plots for revenge as well as disturbing family secrets going back decades to the New Orleans of the first Marie Laveau. The fast-paced action will keep you turning pages, and the actions of the characters will leave you with much to ponder.
