Pepper Paul is a good witch, the last of the powerful Hesperus witches, living a quiet and studious life with her familiar, Whittlesbee, and a library full of ancestral ghosts and books. When Pepper's hunger for knowledge brings her an ancient and perplexing book the shadows fill with portents.

Challenges and friendship begin to fill Pepper's life and, to Whittlesbee, the witch deals with the battles with more ease than she handles friendship.
