Harvard doctoral candidate Dulcie Schwartz is devastated—her thesis work on a mysterious 18th-century gothic author is about to go up in smoke. Visiting scholar Melinda Sloane Harquist claims she has the subject's long-missing second novel and is about to publish a biography about the unidentified author. And when Dulcie goes to work out an academic compromise, she finds Melinda bludgeoned to death with a marble bust…and herself the prime suspect.
