I'm sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.
In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.
It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.
With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

This book is awful. Thank God it was only 176 pages. It had awful writing, a bad plotline, unrealistic events, and stupid explainers for basic words. If you look at my books you'll see that I don't hate sad endings. I don't hate it when bad things happen to characters I love, I don't angry when everything is full of despair. But only as long as it's realistic despair. The things that happened to these kids are just stupid. They're things that would never happen and it's dumb to write about them.I almost ripped my hair out from Snicket explaining words. I get that this book is aimed at younger kids, so it's fine to explain what a word means; it would be good for young readers. But it explain such basic words it was ridiculous. The writing wasn't exactly bad quality, but it was a style I didn't like. I won't say people shouldn't like it, I'm just saying it wasn't for me. If you liked this book... well, I don't really get it, but kudos to you. Doesn't make sense to me, but other people can have opinions, too. This wasn't a very low-quality book, just not my style. I'll probably read more books in the series just because I hate to start and not finish one, but I probably won't like those, either.
