This was a lovely surprise, a simple, well-written historical. Four and a half stars, rounded up to five. It felt like a throwback book from the '90's Simple premise, clear writing and emotional stakes. I won't give a synopsis, because I'm pretty sure I will spoil what made this book great. The emotional struggle that Nora goes through happens very naturally. She's mature, yet impulsive, brave, yet careful. There was only one instance where I felt Nore would have realized she was being manipulated but I guess the story had to advance and this manipulation seemed the easiest path, but Nora never would have fallen for it. I wish more historicals would return to this style. I enjoyed the deep backstories, the secondary characters, and the nagging mystery happening under it all. You forget (much like the hero) that something else very serious is happening.
