He was active in music, studying with John Cage and Henry Cowell and is the author of many books of poetry including BUSTER KEATON ENTERS INTO PARADISE (Left Hand) and BOOK ABOUT LOVE AND DEATH (Something Else). From his early (1964) essay on "Intermedia," which gave the term to the language, up through his influential essay on the concept of an "allusive referential," the impulse of his work was to describe rather than to perscribe.
