Em 1887, o navio Lady Vain naufraga no Pacífico. À deriva e sem esperanças de sobreviver em alto mar, Charles Prendick é resgatado por um navio chefiado pelo doutor Montgomery numa missão no mínimo incomum: levar algumas espécies de animais selvagens para uma pequena ilha sem nome do Pacífico.

se me hizo lento por partes, todo el comienzo lo odié, pero se fue poniendo bueno y las reflexiones del final levantaron bastante.
Dark, suspenseful, brilliant, and thrilling! This book was the oneto teach me the uniqueness of Wells' fiction in a genre no one else could ever master with the same ease and creativity.The Island of Doctor Moreau was not received with any descent amount of enthusiasm by its contemporary readers. The book was condemned upon publication by The Daily Paragraph as a morbid aberration of scientific curiosity. What fueled such a reaction was the fact that the plot had played upon the late Victorian fear and anxiety regarding the new kinds of experimental medical science in a manner that provoked feelings of disgust.The character of Dr. Moreau represents the figure of the foreign vivisector, marked by callousness and indifference towards animals and their sufferings. At the time, vivisection made its way from Europe to England only to be met with feelings of indignation and repugnance.Another reason behind the widespread condemnation of the work, back then, was its allusion to the biological decline and degeneration, which had occupied the British intelligentsia by the turn of the century in accordance with Darwin's theories. While the beast people might have represented the dangers of scientific experimentation under no moral guidance, they had indicated, at the same time, the dark abyss which stared wildly at the population with threatening glances that reminded them constantly of an approaching genetic devolution.Cannibalism is another subtle issue present in the novel through the character of the Leopard man who threatens the life and safety of Prendick, and gives the story a full Gothic tone. The leopard man himself is a hint to the leopard man cult in Sierra Leone in West Africa; a cannibalistic secret society which Colonial Britain had attempted to erase.On the whole, The Island of Doctor Moreau is a science fiction masterpiece spun along the guidelines of the late Victorian Renaissance of Gothic Fiction. It addresses the controversial issue of vivisection, sounds the foundation of morality in scientific realms, explores the boundaries between human and animalistic behaviors, and puts to question the degeneracy of the age. The suspenseful and thrilling manner in which it is written makes of it one of the best works in its genre.
