A Place for Everyone

In the first novel of the Spearfish, SD series, Release the Ashes, Grace and Chase had to suddenly leave Spearfish, South Dakota, after developing ties to the ranch and the man who owns it. The Double Loop had become a place they both felt was becoming their own. Shane Meed had to let them go. As much as he wanted them to stay, he knew they had to return to their old life. With a broken heart, he watched as they flew out of his life and back to the one they knew before.

In A Place for Everyone, the second book in the Spearfish, SD series, Grace and Chase are back in Spearfish—but things are not the same as when they left, as they quickly find out.

It had been months since Shane had talked to her, months since he had seen them, but they remained in his heart and on his mind. He knew it was time to let go. They weren’t coming back. They were in New York. By now, they had acclimated to the life they left behind. Shane needed to move on and start looking for a wife so he could have a family of his own.

With that in mind, he had a date that night with Jodie Wakins. They had gone to school together and dated a little in high school, but never got too involved. He left for college, and she went her own way. Their friendship dissipated.

Yesterday, he ran into her at Slim’s and learned that she had moved back to Spearfish after her divorce. He was surprised to hear it. She came from a family like his—where marriage was meant to last forever. He didn’t have all the facts about why she got divorced, but they agreed to catch up over dinner.

He should be happy. He should be looking forward to it. But he couldn’t shake the feeling of unfinished business with Grace.

The problem was, he couldn’t bring himself to call her or visit her in New York. Besides, a long-distance relationship wasn’t what either of them wanted—or at least, he knew for sure it wasn’t what he wanted. He had no clue what she wanted, so it all went into the pile of unfinished business.

All he knew was that she had to go, and he had to let her.

For days afterward, he kept thinking about the saying: If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, they are yours; if they don’t, then they never were yours to begin with.

It summed up his feelings perfectly.

But that didn’t mean the wanting went away. The time he had spent with Chase and Grace had made him happy. He wanted more of it. He wanted it to continue every day. But they were so far apart, and there was no middle ground. He could never move to New York, and she could never move to South Dakota.

Lost in his thoughts, he didn’t hear Justin’s approach until he heard the crunch of footsteps on the rocks.

“Following me as usual, little brother?”

“You know it.”

Justin reached the top of the ridge and turned in a slow circle to take in the view. “It never changes. Imagine if there were smokestacks or skyscrapers in the distance instead of the Black Hills.”

“Why would I want to imagine that?” Shane’s chest clenched at the mention of skyscrapers, and his mind immediately pictured Grace and Chase. Would it ever fade?

“To better appreciate the beauty?”

“Justin, have you been drinking?”

“No, Shane, I haven’t been drinking.” Justin gave him a knowing look. “So why’d you come out here? Something up? I figured after the divorce, you’d be happier.”

“I am happy. I just came out here to get some air.”

“I see.”
