داستان در قرن نوزدهم می‌گذرد، در عصر طلایی امریکا. نیولند آرچر که اشراف‌زاده‌ای است نیویورکی، در شرف ازدواج با دختری زیبا اما سنتی است به‌نام مِی وِلَند. در این هنگام با بازگشت کنتس اُلِنسکا، دخترعموی مِی، از اروپا روحیۀ سرکش و استقلال‌طلبی او توجه آرچر را جلب می‌کند. آرچر که تا آن زمان کاملاً احساس خوشبختی می‌کرده، پس از آشنایی با اُلِنسکا، با افکاری متفاوت با آنچه تا آن زمان داشته روبه‌رو می‌شود. او که بین عقل و احساس گرفتار شده، باید تصمیم مهمی بگیرد که نتیجۀ آن می‌تواند به زندگی‌اش معنا ببخشد یا به شکل بی‌رحمانه‌ای آن را نابود سازد.
