Audition by Ryu Murakami - 4/5 StarsRyu Murakami’s Audition is a gripping, unsettling dive into psychological horror that lingers long after the final page. The story follows Aoyama, a widower seeking love through a staged audition for a fake film, only to spiral into a chilling nightmare. Murakami masterfully builds tension, blending mundane life with creeping dread, and the slow-burn pacing amplifies the shocking climax. The prose is sharp, and the exploration of loneliness, desire, and deception is hauntingly effective. The only reason it’s not a 5-star read is the dog’s death—unnecessary and gut-punching, it felt like a cheap shot for emotional impact. Still, Audition is a dark, twisted gem for fans of psychological horror.
