Orphaned as a baby, nineteen-year-old Signa has been raised by a string of guardians, each one more interested in her wealth than her well-being—and each has met an untimely end. Her remaining relatives are the elusive Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at Thorn Grove, an estate both glittering and gloomy. Its patriarch mourns his late wife through wild parties, while his son grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation, and his daughter suffers from a mysterious illness. But when their mother’s restless spirit appears claiming she was poisoned, Signa realizes that the family she depends on could be in grave danger and enlists the help of a surly stable boy to hunt down the killer. However, Signa’s best chance of uncovering the murderer is an alliance with Death himself, a fascinating, dangerous shadow who has never been far from her side. Though he’s made her life a living hell, Death shows Signa that their growing connection may be more powerful—and more irresistible—than she ever dared imagine. This book is incredible and I absolutely adored every single second! The characters are all so well thought out and never once fell flat for me. The plot was also so gripping, that I've hardly put this book down. Definitely recommend reading this book and I can't wait to get hold of book two!
‘Stop worrying about society and playing its game, hoping that you'll be good enough. There is no such thing as true goodness, there is only perception.’I had wanted to read the Belladonna series for ages, and I'm not sure why I hadn't done so before now; but I'm so glad I decided to do so as Belladonna was incredible. I couldn't put the book down and was fully immersed in the world that Adalyn Grace had created in this dark fantasy. The world building is really well done as you're drawn into the life of Signa, a girl whose life seems to have Death dancing in the shadows and leaving her cast from family member to family member. We’re in a world of aristocracy, with arrogance, secrets, and the disguise of indifference, and I loved it.Belladonna is a beautifully written mystery that's unique and imaginative, and as I said, I didn't want to put it down. I needed to know if Signa would be safe finally, and wanted to know just what was it about her that had Death lingering… is he a friend or a foe? Each character gives something to the story, from questioning whether they're going to make Signa's newfound sanctuary be endangered or to see her be joyful. There's nothing worse to me than having a character appear who seems to be important initially and then *poof* they're gone, and that never happens. Each background character is there for a reason and breathes life into Belladonna so that it's an engaging read that has you wondering if you could slip on an exquisite outfit and wander around this world. What's also wonderfully done is the way there's a lingering sinister atmosphere that is somehow tangible from the page. There's all this elegance and beauty going on but it almost feels like you're looking at it through a fractured window so it's just not quite as perfect a world as you'd like it to be. Darkness hides alongside Death. There's a fear of whether Signa will lose another home, a person who finally seems to care for her, and that tension is excellently done.
“A human life is a beautiful thing,” he said. “You humans… you feel. You feel so deeply that it consumes you. […]”Signa Farrow, an orphan, has been raised by several guardians, all of whom were more interested in her wealth than her well-being. Her last relatives, the Hawthornes, live at the Thorn Grove estate. Lillian's spirit claims she was poisoned, and Signa fears that Blythe could be next. To solve the mystery, Signa must ally with Death himself, the man she hates most, who will show Signa that their connection may be more powerful than she imagined. The book has excellent writing. The ambiance is described better than the characters, which are developed over time. Many profound phrases regarding life and death are included in the story. The relationship between Signa and Death is the highlight, even with the Sylas in the middle. The Hawthorne family has a great influence on Signa's personal development, and she also helps reconstruct the family after Lillian's death. The setting of the story could easily be around the Victorian era. This book provides a different perspective on death and what it signifies. Although it may not help much with loss, it stimulates a debate on a taboo topic. The book combines fantasy and romance, and the theme is well portrayed. I enjoyed taking my time to ponder over certain phrases and thoughts. I had high expectations for the book, and it did not disappoint. I highly recommend this book for fantasy lovers. While some parts of the ending may be predictable, depending on how much attention you pay and how much fantasy you have read, I was still surprised by the resolution. The story gave me a warm feeling, and I cannot wait to read Foxglove.
2.6 From the hype, I expected something amazing, but I was actually disappointed. The only bits I like were with death in it, and I am still a bit lost. I have no idea what she is going to do next, which is not something I should be feeling after finishing a book.
