Leska Landau was a native of Asteroidal Orbiting Colony 5, controlled by the Hong Kong based Thrask, Inc. When he was 13 years old, his parents, all of his records, and the records of his family disappeared, effectively erasing his existence. For a few years, he lived the shadowy life or an "alley rat", sleeping in any cranny he could find, stealing, scrounging, and begging to survive. Then he was caught pilfering apples by the authority and given a choice between joining the Thraskian Storm Troops or prison. He was guided subtly and not so subtly into the Storm Troops.
Life in the Storm Troops was hard and violent, but Leska had mysteriously lost the ability to feel or care. He participated in a brutal suppression of a riot in his native colony, a highly efficient and destructive attack on a city of Thrask's perennial enemy the Lorise Corporation, on Mars, and an even more horrendous assault on Arstrong City on the Moon, all without concern for the immorality of his actions. When the war with Lorise was carried to Earth, Leska fought on the Malay Peninsula and was captured by a well-trained, effective Lorisian fighter, who was also a sympathetic woman. Thrask lost the war, and "rehabilitation" by his Lorisian captors was at least as hard as Storm Trooper life and might be better termed torture. Leska was faarmed out to n Alabama cotton farmer to work cotton, and his new boss turned out to be Kit Tomchek.
Leska was well treated for the first time in years. He responded to the best of his ability, but that mysterious lack of feeling and concern was still there. Kit noticed, including that Leska had an automatic obedience to orders-- an orders,no matter how illogical or dangerous. They realized that he was a lethal weapon with no control over his actions, and Leska wanted the wanton violence that he was capable of stopped! Kit enlisted the help of her psychiatrist uncle, and they began to unravel the snarled clues as to what had happened to Leska. Could he ever have a normal life, including a relationship with Kit? Would he ever learn why his childhood life had been disrupted and what had happened to his parents?
