A black hole has entered the Solar System, rampaging through the outer planets with nowhere left to go but Earth: Humanity's only shot at survival is to aim a relativistic ship at the edge of the black hole--just close enough to steal its dark power to journey back to Earth's primeval past.

Once there, a team of scientists must complete their world-saving mission in the lost, spellbound world of Paleolithic Europe, where every turn might bring them face to face with a cave lion, a herd of woolly mammoths...or straight into the bloody war between humanity's early ancestors and Neanderthal.
