Dawn On A Distant Shore

Elizabeth Bonner gives birth to healthy twins in the middle of a February blizzard and takes on the challenges that come along with life on the edge of the New York wilderness, only to find that peace is short lived. From a stranger they learn that Nathaniel's father is in prison in British Canada, and there is only one choice before them: Nathaniel must leave his family and travel to Montreal. A dangerous situation evolves into a disaster when Nathaniel himself is accused of spying and arrested. He has both old friends and old enemies in the city where he spent a year as a young man, and there is little doubt that without intervention both husband and father-in-law will go to the gallows.

Together with Curiosity Freeman and Runs-from-Bears, Elizabeth takes her infants and her young step-daughter Hannah on a desperate journey through the wilderness and a treacherous spring thaw to Canada. There she finds allies and friends but also Nathaniel's first lover, a woman who complicates the rescue in ways she could not have imagined. Freeing Nathaniel and Hawkeye will require more than simple bravery and ingenuity, and the stakes are higher: to save her husband she has unwittingly put her children in the power of an enemy she failed to recognize. She came to Canada to save her husband, and in the process sees her family torn in two.

Elizabeth and Nathaniel must board the Jackdaw, captained by the unscrupulous Mac Stoker, and sail to Scotland. There they will find that Hawkeye, orphaned as an infant on the frontier, has relatives who will demand the impossible of him. The Scotts of Carryck are in crisis, and the Bonners are the key to a solution.
