I was pretty excited to win this from Goodreads. However, I was sadly mistaken when I started reading the book. The book has a good plot line, with a young boy who loves math trying to make a better life for him and his family. However, I got so tired of the "wah, wah poor Palestinians - they're so persecuted by the Israelis" storyline. I slammed the book down repeatedly in the beginning for its portrayal of Israelis, I expected a more even handed portrayal from someone with a Masters in Middle Eastern Studies! As I said, I enjoyed the plot line - but it was the excessive discussion of politics and particularly its "everyone should just be friends and get along" that ultimately led to it getting 3 stars from me. I think the fiction was just a way for the author to express her political opinion, rather than a character study.
