4.5 ⭐️Honestly, the cover makes it look like it's just going to be this totally goofy, ridiculous video game story. And it is hilarious. I especially love the humour. But if you actually think about it for a second, the setup is so dark. Earth gets wiped out instantly and the survivors are forced into this twisted, televised alien gladiator game for the universe's entertainment. It’s pretty messed up!But the author does such a good job balancing the grim stuff with the comedy so it never feels depressing. Plus, the world-building is wild, and Carl and Princess Donut are the absolute best duo.New Achievement! You've finished Book 1.Reward: You get to read Book 2.
This was my first lit RPG and I liked it enough to try another in this genre but not the next in the series. The characters were fun, especially Donut. I know I should have expected the links to gaming but it just seemed over the top. For me, the book was over-hyped.
