I struggled with it the first time I read it which took me two times to finish it. I just completely put down for two months the second read which I think caused my reading slump.Like this one is really different when you have the story focusing on the Beauty and one of sisters finding love when most BATB retellings focus on the beauty character while the sisters are background.That being said, I have to get this off my chest.I don't like Lou at all.Honestly, I can't stand her and that's coming from a person who loves strong female characters. She is probably one the most aggravating, contentious , and hypocritical "beauty" I have read in my life. You want to root for her but you also want her to shut the fuck up and turn it down a notch. She takes the " Mother Hen" role to the extreme when it comes to Cinna.Even though I really don't like her a lot either, Cinna should be the actual beauty in this story since they really all they bring up in this story about her. Her beauty and trying to keep her " virtue" which Lou goes overboard with.Cinna just needs to tell Lou off on how she treats her like she cannot make her own decisions. Especially the fact Lou pretty much raised her so it is almost like Lou feels like she didn’t raise right which she did.For a woman who is supposed to be a widow, Lou just comes off being more judgmental and then understanding to everyone. She's like a bulldozer that wants to knock everything in her way down.Ballard feels like " I haven't had sex in five centuries so Lou wakes up my third leg." instead of someone with a tortured past which is the reason why him, his son and the rest of the household is cursed. I don't know why the sex feels boring in this one. I really was cleaning out my closet when Lou and Ballard sex scene was happening and barely cared about it.I hate that Gavin gets the 3rd degree from Lou all the time when his intentions are very very clear. He wants to court Cinna and marry her which he makes very very clear. You can tell Ballard raised a respective gentleman and Lou keeps thinking he wants to get under Cinna's dress. Ballard may have been a callous ruthless rake in the past but he didn't raise his son to be one.Ambrose and Madga are the best two characters in this story. Ambrose is such a good sparring partner for Lou. Madga keeps the whole household running and on their toes.The pacing of this book is off as well and nothing really happens. It does have a good backstory but that doesn't help it.Literally had a whole chapter that was an hour long on audiobook and nothing happened. The only thing of importance in that chapter was like the first four mins dealing with Ballard's backstory. Other than that the whole chapter is about them catching and cleaning a boar for meat. Stuff happens in the two chapters after that long chapter.Honestly, if I would have read this before Radiance I don't think I would have been a Grace fan. Grace is really heavy on the characters pushing the story instead of plot but when you really don't like the MC that much it's a chore to get through. When you feel like the MC needs to tone down a tad bit with the " protecting Cinna's virginity" brigade.I honestly would recommend Radiance more, which is a story with Beauty and the Beast vibes than this one which is supposed to be an actual traditional retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
