I'll preface my rating with the fact it's probably not the books fault as much as it's mine being newer to reading. The book is very dense and can be overly descriptive at times. Some will actually really love that. The chapters are longer but it gives Tolkien time to really explain whats going on. I would suggest anyone who is into fantasy or wants to read the LOTR series to go for it. It can seem daunting at first but just stick with it. It's an incredible fun adventure and I'm excited to finish the series.
This edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic is illustrated with 48 paintings by noted artist Michael Hague. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum. Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.
Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo-alone and unaided-who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside . . . This stirring adventure fantasy begins the tale of the hobbits that was continued by J.R.R. Tolkien in his bestselling epic The Lord of the Rings.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkeness bind them
In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, The Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit.
In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.
I struggled with rating this because I don't think this is a graphic novel. It's an art book with Tolkien's words placed over them. It's beautiful, and a good story because The Hobbit is fantastic. But I couldn't help thinking that I would have enjoyed an actual adaptation of the novel rather than what this was. I would have really enjoyed seeing the artist showing us the story, and not just illustrating scenes and telling us what's happening. It almost seemed like a waste of time, to be honest, to read these huge paragraphs placed over illustrations. Near the end I just skipped them altogether, since I already know the story very well, and just flipped through looking at the art. I enjoyed it better that way.
Hmm not a Big fan.its drawn out and torturing. but at the same time you have to read it, beacuse you want to know what happens.(i read this back before the movie). but if you have seen the movie and then read the book, you will find Gaps, and lots of them.
29/3/11 finished reading for the third time! I love it! i don't see a need to change my original review.I have read this one twice so far, and i probably will continue to go back to it again and again. This according to an old friend of mine is a childrens book. i can understand why she would say that as this was easier to read than the LOTR trilogy that follows.
Não consegui me envolver, não me prendeu. Não me fez amar desesperadamente os personagens e torcer, surtar ou chorar por eles. Criei grandes expectativas, mas infelizmente me decepcionei.
I have seen the movies multiple times and they are amazing. I think they did a fantastic job of casting. Now, going into the books, I have a clear vision of the characters which helps a lot. It feels like I'm reliving the movies but with more detail. This book is amazing. The characters are amazing. It's so well written that it's inspiring. I want to write my own world, my own characters, my own journey. And if they are half as amazing as this book is, I'll be happy.
Hey there! So, I just finished reading "The Fellowship of the Ring" by J.R.R. Tolkien, and I thought I'd jot down my thoughts. Keep in mind, I'm not usually into fantasy books, but I decided to give this a shot since it's such a classic.First off, this was my introduction to proper fantasy literature, and I've got to say, it kind of confirmed my suspicions that fantasy might not be my cup of tea. Don't get me wrong, the book wasn't bad – it just didn't blow me away. The story follows Frodo, a hobbit who inherits a powerful ring and sets off on a journey to destroy it. Sounds exciting, right? Well, it kind of is, but also kind of isn't. The whole book felt like one long walking tour through Middle-earth. We meet new characters, visit different kingdoms, and face some dangers along the way. It's definitely an adventure, but sometimes I found myself thinking, "Okay, but when is something really going to happen?"I will say that I enjoyed the characters and their interactions. Tolkien does a great job of making you feel like you're part of the fellowship. The friendships, the bravery, the scary moments – it all feels very real. But for me, the plot itself was a bit thin. It's basically "hobbit finds ring, hobbit must destroy ring" stretched out over hundreds of pages. The writing style is pretty easy to follow, which I appreciated. However, I did struggle with remembering all the names of people and places. Seriously, does every character and location need such a complicated name?By the end of the book, I wasn't super excited to pick up the next one in the series. I mean, I can see why people love it – the world-building is impressive, and there's a sense of epic scale to everything. But for me, it just didn't click in a way that made me want to invest more time in the story.I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars. It's well-written and I can appreciate why it's a classic, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me personally. If you're into fantasy or want to check out a cornerstone of the genre, go for it! But if you're like me and prefer books with more straightforward plots, maybe think twice before diving in.Remember, this is just my take as a casual reader. Millions of people absolutely love this book, so don't let my opinion stop you if you're curious about it!
