Based on his Sandars Lectures at Cambridge University during the 1980s, book designer and historian of book design McLean explores the emergence of the typographer as a professional. He traces developments in England, America, France, and Germany from the 17th century to the 1980' from pen-drawn calligraphy covers through Pre-Raphaelite book pages and German Art Nouveau to European state-of-the-art design.
