Life is pure gloom for young David Morris, trapped in a perpetually unfinished house with with an ever increasing brood of step siblings. At times he genuinely believes the religious tenets of his upbringing. At other times, he has his doubts.God and fate seem unexplainably cruel as he pines for Nietzchy Jobe, a promiscuous girl from an atheist family who represents essentially everything he is not supposed to find attractive in girls. It causes a great mix of excitement and confusion when, despite their differing social statuses, she begins paying attention to him. An accident ends their lives, as well as their still unconsummated romance. In the cruelest irony David can imagine, his life of upright morality and dutiful prayer is rewarded with an eternity in Heaven, only to discover that the girl he loves will spend her eternity in Hell, accompanied by the bullies who tormented him in life. It is only through great effort on his part that they are brought together.
