This book is what I should have read in high school literature because instead of sleeping through each lecture, I would have listened and argued about the most mundane points, and then happily written essays on it. (When someone writes a book on the House of Leaves I am pre-ordering that.Even though marketed as a horror book, it is the exploration of relationships and fears; and the human psyche itself that makes the book so powerful. It is Danielewski’s approach of tackling these ideas from multiple perspectives, whether historical, philosophical, and scientific or even mythical, that creates a beautiful thought-provoking story. I can't even grasp the imagination and thought process required to not only create a story like this but then analyse and study it. Even the inclusion of real-life references, serves a purpose, by keeping the book grounded in reality and makes you wonder; was there a house on Ash Tree Lane.Possibly, my favourite thing about House of Leaves though is the incredible community because every time I look up a reference someone has put up a translation or had an amazing discussion on what that means.Overall, this book has made me want to experiment with ergodic literature, but I do wonder if there will be a work that will match this standard because Danielewski's imagination is truly extraordinary. Simply put, reading this book is an unforgettable experience that everyone should do at least once and I absolutely love it.
