Lander Rock Climbs

Situated on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains, Lander, Wyoming is a rock climber s dream. Within one hour of town, there are close to two thousand rock climbs. Drive another hour, and you can add a thousand more. These climbs range from sandstone boulder problems, to one pitch limestone sport climbs, to grade V granite walls. Best known for the sport routes at Wild Iris and Sinks Canyon, Lander offers decent bouldering, great granite climbing, and enough rest day activities to keep a climber happy for a pretty long time. An easy weekend trip from Salt Lake, Jackson, or Denver, the Lander area has much to offer the traveling climber. Lander has grown into a climbers town. Many full-time climbers moved here in the 90s, only to stay and become business owners, professionals, or full-time has-beens. Buy a burger, cash a check, or get pulled over by a cop, and it s likely you ll be dealing with someone who came here to climb. In the four years since we put together Lander Sport Climbs, much has happened. The 50-plus years of climbing development in Lander continued at a good pace with nearly a hundred new climbs being done since 2007. The 5.14c grade was firmly established and a huge number of new moderates were opened. New crags were explored, old anchors were replaced, and climbers in the area continued an amicable and productive relationship with land managers. With this edition, we detail routes on the same nine cliffs covered in Lander Sport Climbs, and have added details of climbs on two more granite crags in Sinks Canyon, the three shady side dolomite crags in the canyon, and five sandstone cliffs in the canyon. Also covered is the Miner s Delight wall, which sits southeast of the Wild Iris area.
