In this edition of the admirable work of the Archbishop of Cambray, we have omitted, as unsuited to the capacities of children, the detailed account of the laws framed by Mentor for Salentum; and, also, for reasons sû?iciently obvious, those parts of the work involving the inter course of the youthful hero with Calypso' and her nymphs. Thus, from a long poem an instructive little romance has been formed, and a work that was be. Fore put into the hands of children to verylittle purpose, adapted at once to their capacities and inclin'ation. Excepting a few Words necessarily in troduced to connect the several parts, the text is entirely Fenelo1i' 5. To render the translation more easy to beginners, we have added, at the bottom of each page, the true signification of words having more than one meaning, and ex planations of the more difficult idiomatic phrases.
