A grand country estate.
On her last day as a Detective, Midge McGowan is given the retirement present from a ticket to take part in a haunted house tour. DNF'd half way through because oh my god just get to the pointI picked up this book from a holiday new releases section at the book store, and was intrigued by the idea of a Christmas-themed murder mystery. Aside from this taking place in December, there's no mention of the holidays at all, which is fine but this could have been placed at any other time of the year because it didn't affect anything about the plot.Our main character is a fat middle aged lesbian. This is really all we know about her and it's repeated half a million times. We get it- she's overweight. She's 55 and by the way the author writes her, you'd think she's 85 or something. This woman is younger than my own mother and I've never met a woman around my mother's age so bland and boring. Her only interest is apparently embroidery. BORING. As for her sexuality, being that this is a book published in 2025 and set in modern times. No one in this story even gives a shit that she's gay (or even cares to ask) so I don't know why the author seems to make it such a big deal. This is a modern woman living with her "companion" like it's the 1920s.And our protagonist is not alone in this sense. All of the characters are bland and honestly pretty irritating. I understand wanting your characters to be somewhat vague and mysterious being that it's a "whodunit" story but they're all weird and boring, and even halfway through the book we don't learn anything about them, nor do they grow or bond with one another.It takes a while to even get to the murder in the book, and again, halfway through we haven't even started truly "investigating" what happened. I was hoping for some suspense or tension, being that no one can trust anyone, but being that everyone are essentially strangers there's barely a motive for a murder to begin with. We barely even know what our MC thinks about it! I've read spoilers as to who actually did it because I know damn well I'm never picking this book up again, and the end is stupid and not believable. All in all I give it a 1.5 only because I thought the portions of the book written in podcast format were slightly more interesting, but nonetheless I wouldn't pick up this book again and would skip it altogether.
