The thoughtful reader of these Notes on Nursing will enjoy the sensation of having at her side a "guide, philosopher, and friend" who walks painstakingly beside her, talking of nursing and putting a finger squarely on "what it is and what it is not." To read and reread is to experience taking on from a great teacher some of the things which she has learned and to become with her intolerant of any mediocrity in the care the nurse gives her patient, including what is called here the "momentous minutiae."
The book was intended "to give hints for thought to women who have personal charge of the health of others... knowledge which everyone ought to have - distinct from medical knowledge, which only a profession can have." At the time it was first published there were no schools for nurses and therefore no trained nurses.
