Its use of pastiche in regard to Dracula revives the latter work, and draws from its tradition in order to create a new vampire tale, at once new and old, familiar and creative. The best way to approach this book is arguably through King's own description of the general body of his fiction; that is to say as a literary equivalent of a big Mac and french fries from McDonald's. This is accurate because the book is extremely easy to read, probably on account of the two dimensional aspect of King's characters. Many of his recurrent character types are present in Salem's Lot including Marc Peatry as the wise child and Benjamin Mears as the boyish man. This, however, is, by no means, due to a limitation in the author's style or a shortcoming in his ability to create complexity within his characters. Quite the opposite, just like Dickens, King uses the two-dimensional aspect of his characters as a trademark and a means to focus on the ideas and plot of his works. Salem's Lot, for instance, merges the gothic tradition of Dracula and the pop culture of comic books with all their new traits of the monster figure in general and the vampire in particular. As far as my own opinion is concerned, Salem's Lot is not my favorite King's work and, by no means, the peak of his horror fiction, but it remains a very interesting and engaging revival of the vampire horror narrative.
