Savage Sleep

Set in 1943, Millen Brand's Savage Sleep tells the story of a recently graduated psychiatrist (Dr. Marks) who mixes Freudean psychoanalysis with standard psychiatric treatment (electric or insulin shock). We come to know and care for severely disturbed patients, who come alive in narrative and dialog. Dr. Marks' unorthodox, though successful treatment of his patients leads to tension with the medical community, and ultimately to some unexpected decisions by Dr. Marks.
