Save Us

Firstly, I hope Mortimer's pillow is forever too hot, his feet forever too cold and his food forever too salty. Secondly, I feel confident in saying this is a 3⭐ series for me.Don't get me wrong, I loved the romance between Ruby and James and this story has a special place in my heart because of the TV series.I loved how they became a team and they learned to communicate and trust each other. I loved how James' feelings never wavered, his commitment never dimmed. Their relationship is genuinely adorable and I enjoyed being there for it. But can we agree that the series is problematic as hell? We've criticized Pretty Little Liars for the student-teacher relationship, but we still romanticize it here? Lydia deserved a lot better than having kids at 18 with a man much older than her (yes, 24 is much older than 18 and if you think otherwise, I don't know what to tell you), in a relationship that probably started when she was at least 16?! I simply cannot get past that.The only reason I think this is seen as acceptable in the book is that they have money, so she's shielded by the consequences of this decision and does get a future and a happy ending. Had this happened in any other circumstances, we'd all be clutching our pearls.The relationship literally takes up half of the story and is the catalyst for the entire plot, so it is impossible to ignore and it made me feel very icky.The writing was good, easy to read. "Save us", in particular, felt a bit draggy at points. Some of the chapters were boring and the pacing was a bit weird.Overall, 3⭐ seems fair.
