omg that was a hard ride, i mean its too much, but god damn its beautiful
"Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have great sadness on earth."This book actually twisted my head so much. At times I felt like I was going insane with Raskolnikov. His grief, apathy, guilt, and madness were mine. Morally, this book made me question my own opinions on the value of human life and towards the end I really struggled not to agree with Raskolnikov'a scattered justification for his crimes. Why do we value the lives of loathsome creatures? Why shouldn't those who are better than have the right to dispose of them? Dangerous thinking. I had to take a lot of breaks to avoid fully turning into a modern Raskolnikov myself lmfao Dostoevsky refuses to shy away from the dark and sick parts of humanity and he really dove deep into the human mind. This book felt personal in every way. From Porfiry's cat and mouse game of psychological torture, to Raskolnikov seeing Svigrigailov as what he could become, to the unconditional love Sonia had for Raskolnikov despite what he had done. Every single word was a masterpiece that got so deeply inside my own head, at times I couldn't see where I ended and Raskolnikov started. Infinitity fucking stars. Also Razumikhin is best boy. 10/10 love the drunk golden retriever along for the ride.
