After the ending of Restore Me, where it felt like literally everyone was dead, suddenly seeing everyone alive again was a lot. I really had to reset my brain for a moment. That said, Kenji POV is always a win. I love him. He is funny, sarcastic, and brings much needed comic relief. Especially because this series deals with some pretty heavy themes. What I really like about Kenji is that he is not just jokes. He is emotional, loyal, and extremely protective of the people he loves, and that comes through very clearly here. This book did not really change how I see Kenji. He is still very much Kenji. But it was really fun to experience everything from his perspective. It definitely felt like an extra rather than something absolutely essential, although I do think the ending is important enough that I would not skip it.I also liked getting more background on Nazeera. Her story, especially the explanation about why she covers her hair and who she does it for, actually stayed with me and added more depth to her character. That being said, this novella was not anything groundbreaking. A lot of it felt familiar since it overlaps with Restore Me, just from a different point of view. It was enjoyable, but it did not blow me away.Overall, Shadow Me is a nice addition to the series. It adds depth, keeps a good balance between humor and darker moments, and gives us more time with Kenji. Which I will never complain about. A fun read, just not a standout.
Juliette is still reeling from Warner's betrayal, and Kenji is trying to balance his friendship with her with his responsibilities as a leader of the resistance against the Reestablishment. Things get even more interesting when an unexpected person from Omega Point’s past surfaces. It was nice to finally see everything from Kenji's perspective. Always trying to keep positive for other people even when he doesn't feel like being positive. This novella was full of Kenji’s signature sass and big heart. We also got to see more of Kenji's sensitive side and how much pressure he's under. He's literally the glue holding the group together but no one seems to ever check up on how Kenji's actually doing and that makes me sad. He's such a cinnamon roll just wanting to please everyone and make sure everyone's okay. Honestly his friendship with Juliette is goals. He's so supportive of her and she listens to him when he finally feels comfortable enough to open up.
