I actually really struggled with this book - it felt very flat. The storyline was great, but so much explaining that it seemed to drag on quite a bit for me.
"One had followed the rules, and one had not. But the problem with rules, he reflected, was that they implied a right and a wrong way to do things. When in fact, most of the time there were simply ways, none of them quite wrong or quite right, and nothing to tell you for sure which side of the line you stood on."
the last four chapters had me on an emotional roller-coaster and now im just sitting here like ?? where am i
A really beautifully written piece of fiction. I specify that it's fiction because it is so rich in depth and detail, that Ng's characters might as well be real people. Its a difficult book to describe. The plot is subtle and unassuming and I just fell completely in love with every aspect of the story. It doesn't rely on twists or shock reveals to drive it along, but is perfectly paced and not a single word is wasted.
