For centuries, humans and the magical races of Arcanis have been locked in conflict. The Arcane Crucible, a deadly trial held every twenty-five years, offers a glimmer of hope for peace—but at a steep cost.
Elyria Lightbreaker, once a celebrated fae war hero, has been living in the shadow of her past. After losing the man she loved to the previous Crucible, she has sworn to protect his sister from meeting the same end. To keep her promise, Elyria must find the strength to face the chaos she thought she left behind.
Cedric Thorne, hardened by grief and driven by vengeance, has devoted his life to conquering the Crucible on humanity’s behalf. To win, he’ll have to rely on the one person he despises Elyria, the fae warrior he blames for his parents’ deaths.
Thrown together by circumstance, Elyria and Cedric must endure brutal trials that test their strength, spirit, and power. Fragile alliances, shifting loyalties, and growing feelings between them threaten to tip the scales of fate.
Smoke and Scar is the gripping first installment in the Shattered Crown Trilogy, a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romantic fantasy filled with high stakes, dark magic, breathtaking world-building, and unforgettable characters. Perfect for fans of The Serpent & the Wings of Night, Throne of Glass, and Trial of the Sun Queen.
Will Elyria and Cedric survive the trials…or destroy each other along the way?

Drowning in grief after a devastating loss, Elyria finds herself at a crossroads when an old friend is put in danger after joining the legendary Crucible, a series of deadly trials where the winner is offered a chance to bring peace to their people. Willing to do anything to protect the last of her loved ones, Elyria enters the Crucible herself. As she fights to survive the trials, she also battles her own heart—drawn to another contestant, a human knight who blames her for his family’s deaths. In a game of life and death where only one may stand, who will be left standing? This book completely sucked me in—from the world-building and pacing to the characters themselves. Elyria is a strong, resilient FMC who pushes forward to protect those she loves despite her own pain and grief. She’s the kind of heroine you root for and find hope in. Cedric, the MMC, feels like a natural balance to Elyria. Human and fae alike have much to learn from each other, and his own gifts, strengths, and quiet kindness made him especially enjoyable. While the enemies-to-lovers tension didn’t last as long as I personally hoped—there’s clear attraction almost immediately—the dynamic was still compelling. It was also refreshing to read a story where the FMC is undeniably the stronger, more protective half of the couple, even if I’m still deciding how much I loved that shift. The Crucible trials were engaging and fresh, and I loved watching Elyria and Cedric grow over the course of the story—especially Elyria gaining a new perspective on her magic and finding moments of personal healing. The side characters added just the right amount of levity while still raising the stakes and tension. And while I thought I saw the ending coming, I absolutely did not—which made it all the better. I can’t wait to continue with book two and see where Elyria and Cedric’s story goes next.Tropes: deadly trials · trauma · slow burn · strong, protective FMC · betrayal · fae x humanThank you to NetGalley and Scarlett Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Twisty, turny, epic questThis was like d and d meets the hunger games but sexy? I could barely handle all the yearning (in the best way!) and the battles were epic and there was some plot twist that I didn't see coming. The last few chapters had my jaw to the floor!
This was freaking awesome book! The thrill behind each trail was such a nail bitter! I enjoyed not once of it and can’t wait for more!
