William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) was an American poet, novelist and doctor from Rutherford, New Jersey. He was a leading figure in the Imagist and Modernist movements, and is known for his experimental use of language and his vivid, imagistic poetry. He was also a practicing physician, his medical career lasting over 40 years. Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, to a Puerto Rican mother and English father. He attended Horace Mann School in New York City and the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied medicine and wrote poetry. After graduating in 1906, he completed a residency in pediatrics and began practicing as a general practitioner. He maintained a medical practice until his death in 1963. Williams was heavily influenced by Walt Whitman and Ezra Pound, and his early writing was heavily imagistic and focused on the beauty of everyday life. His best-known works include The Red Wheelbarrow (1923), Spring and All (1923), In the American Grain (1925), and the long poem, Paterson (1946-1958). Williams was also an influential essayist and playwright, and was a founding member of the Objectivist poets. Throughout his career, Williams pushed for a poetry that was grounded in everyday life and language, eschewing traditional forms and experimenting with different styles and techniques. His work came to be seen as a key part of the ‘New American Poetry’, and his influence continues to be felt today. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1963, shortly before his death.
