مشاهده همه If got one thing I hope you can take away, it is this. Monoculture is shiook for clear, zhun meanings and for control over the whole linguistic field. But multiculturalism celebrates flux, ambiguity, and a broad range of meanings. A language of multicultural society can think macam a homogeneous one anot? You say lah. I enjoyed this book a lot! The choice to write it in the tone of Singlish was a humorous choice which elevated the experience. It really felt like a friend trying to explain the language, and a smart choice as you learn a language by seeing it in application. There were so many phrases that I learned from this book!A few pitfalls though: since there is no standardized way of spelling Singlish words, it was a bit hard to understand what exactly the author was referring to. For example, Siao and Siow (the latter is the one that the author used) which is adapted from Chinese dialect (hokkien, I believe). I had to scratch my head abit to unnerstand what Siow mean ah. Some kind of surname is it? Anyways, it's not the author's fault. Just a pitfall of Singlish. Do note that there is a glossary at the back which will help you tremendously. I did not know that leeter was little until I read the glossary... haha. Very fun book. Highly recommend leeter chewren to read too. I hardly hear children speak Singlish these days (<- Read that sentence with an American or British accent please).
