For more than forty years Noel Whitcomb's name was synonymous with the highest standard of journalism and he became a household name. One of his lifelong dreams was to create the world's greatest racing club and the author of this book, David Johnson, assisted him in achieving this. Some 600,000 horseracing enthusiasts became members over the course of twenty years, many of whom travelled the globe on the exotic tours which David Johnson arranged. This book tells the story of what was involved in some of these tours. All involved the most fastidious attention to detail – reservations at luxury hotels, land arrangements, private transfers, races run in the name of the Club and of important meetings with Jockey Club executives throughout a vast number of destinations. This is a fascinating and evocative account of a life style and series of happenings which have, sadly, passed into history. It is a must read for all those with an interest in horseracing or who simply enjoy a travel narrative exceptionally well told.David Johnson was born in Eastbourne and privately educated at Hove College. After a brief spell at Barclays Bank and then National Service he joined the staff of British European Airways when he began his career in the travel industry, including his time with Panorama Holidays, a prominent U K based Tour Operator. He has two children from his first marriage, Stephen and Rowena and married a second time in 1992 to Denise, a French Canadian by birth. They are happily retired and living in France for the past ten years. His hobbies are reading, gardening and specialising in the collection of the exquisite Queen Victorian stamps of Queensland, Australia.
