Why do we search for evidence of life after death?
For many people it is because they do not believe in their own mortality and seek evidence that they are correct. For many other people it is because they can't face belief in their own mortality and they seek the same evidence to prove their fears wrong.
Because death has an air of inevitability about it we want to find a way to cheat it. For a few, there are schemes such as cryonic suspension - freezing a damaged body so that it may be revived in a future time. For the majority the way to cheat death is to redefine it as a doorway rather than a brick wall.
But is it just a question of perception and personal desires? If we are unable to conceive of our mortality is it because our race memories and even personal experiences tell us that we are immortal. Surely there is as much logic to that argument as any other.
Those, often of a 'scientific' persuasion, who pronounce that 'when you're dead, you're dead' are usually doing so out of fear. There is the fear that any other stance is irrational, and a fear of facing a world which holds mysteries.
For many others, usually of an artistic or intuitive persuasion, the mystery is itself reason enough to chase the evidence.
In the end, for all of use, we chase the evidence in order that we create a belief that allows us to live better lives. But for those who want a promise of life beyond the grave, there is always the caution of Noel Coward who "We have no guarantee that the afterlife will be any less exasperating than this one."
We have written this book because we want to challenge the modern, materialistic, pessimistic beliefs that arose with the mechanistic, technological age. We also want to add our piece to the pressure on science to change its viewpoints; it must learn to accommodate investigation in a way that gives the facts a chance to speak for themselves even if they do not line up to attention in a laboratory. For our reason d'être we turn to Jacob
"Ask an impertinent question, and you are on the way to the pertinent answer."
We hope this book offers a good many impertinent questions.
