The author discusses social and economic conditions prevailed in the late 19th Century Malenadu. The story revolves around characters of the then prevailing feudal system- Heggades/Gowdas (the landlords) and their serfs belonging to different castes at multiple locations with interlinking characters and their stories.

The novel is acclaimed and very popular among Kannada readers, and is often prescribed as one of the 'must-read' novels of Kannada language. It portrays the love between the protagonists, the risks they dare to take. It also revolves around the social situations prevailed in malenadu region around the ending of 19th century.
