A Fire Upon the Deep

The room smells faintly of flowers, although the scent doesn't seem to come from the paintings or the furniture. Perhaps the smell comes from the frescoes on the ceiling. They seem to depict the same pastoral scene, although they are much more detailed. As you look closer, you realize that the figures are dressed oddly and appear to be completely motionless.
You spot a note on the desk. "Your rooms are number 1-3," it says. "Please do not disturb me during my work." You pick up the letter and read it again.
"The first guest room is yours. I suggest you sleep here tonight. The second guest room is mine. Please don't touch anything unless you absolutely must. My work requires total silence. Thank you for understanding."
