Description

Violet steps into the tumultuous world of the Basgiath War College, where mere survival seems an impossible feat. As she navigates the treacherous landscape of both rivalries and alliances, the weight of expectations bears down heavily on her. Despite the skepticism of her peers and mentors, Violet’s unyielding spirit begins to shine as she faces the trials designed to break her.

As friendships are forged and shattered in the face of relentless challenges, Violet discovers hidden strengths within herself. The bonds she forms will test her loyalty and ultimately shape her destiny in a world where every choice is laced with danger. With stakes at an all-time high, her journey becomes one of resilience, courage, and the pursuit of a cause greater than herself.

Technically if it wasn't for how much I struggled reading the first part, I would've rated this higher. The last two chapters of part one and the entirety of part two tho? THOUSAND TIMES IS A FIVE STAR.

I actually enjoyed reading this book, despite so many things I disliked about it. There’s something about a war college and dragons and even Violet, as clueless as she is at times, that keeps drawing me back to this series. I genuinely like the premise and so I will keep reading the books if only to keep enjoying Tairn’s grouchy grandpa attitude and Andarna’s sass. HOWEVER…There is so much that was just added in and flippantly brought up for the sake of the ‘wow’ factor as opposed to actual shocking developments in the story. I felt that Yarros wrote the story in such a way that things that were supposed to be earth shattering just…weren’t. Like Andarna being a new breed? That’s great, and I love Andarna but I saw the plot twist coming from a mile away with all the references to ‘shimmery’ scale color changes and such. It was foreshadowed far too much. I’ve noticed this is a habit that Yarros does in her writing.I also had a real hard time with Xaden in this book. I get it, he’s supposed to be this sexy, lithe, badass, tattooed dragon rider turned teddy bear for his one true love. In a lot of ways I felt he was written in an attempt to be the ‘Rhysand’ in the story (ACOTAR for those unfamiliar), except he (in my opinion) fell hopelessly flat and was downright unlikable by the time my read through was complete. He CONSTANTLY lies to Violet which I’ve gotten a good amount of whiplash from in these books. It very rapidly bounces from Violet being mad about him lying to her to her brushing it aside and loving and fucking him again. Others may not agree, but I found the whole thing very toxic and sour. I also don’t feel his character was developed or explored enough emotionally or through his actions to suddenly feel sorry for him at the end of the book when he’s turned. In fact, there were points in the story where I found myself desperately hoping for a different, warmer love interest to spring up. I very much found Xaden lacking. Finally, because I have to say it, Yarros must have thought she couldn’t use swear words in the first book and then found out she could without consequence in this one. I’m not against swearing. When it’s done well and seamlessly it should flow into the story with the natural flow of dialogue between characters but this is not Yarros’ strong point. The overuse of ‘fuck’ randomly and swear words just for the sake of swear words was distracting to say the least. It read very clunky and her dialogue (in my opinion) suffered for it. Overall, I don’t feel that the storyline or characters are bad concepts in this series but I feel like that’s all they are. Underdeveloped concepts. It would have served these books well to stay in development for a longer period. The biggest flaws I had with the story revolved around poor writing choices and underdevelopment. With that being said, when’s the next one coming out?

Me diverti lendo? Me diverti. Eu gostei do livro? Gostei.

This book actually broke me... I needed a palette cleanser ASAP after this one... It was a roller coaster with a blindfold because I didn't see it coming!
I am not sure I'll be able to read the next one yet! I need some space to forget the heartbreak that I experienced!
It's an amazing book! You should read it... 🤣

What was that ending? Like, it felt very rushed. Otherwise, the pacing was nice just the ending peeved me...

I feel empty. It's been a few hours since I finished this book and I still feel empty inside. Yet again, Rebecca Yarros made me cry. I don't know what magic she weaves into her words but I never at books. And yet I have cried at both of hers within the same week. I'm not sure how long I have to wait for Book 3 but I can tell you now it's way too long. Was this book better than Fourth Wing? I would say no but I generally find that that's the case when a sequel comes out. However, I'm sure as hell going to be continuing this series. Overall, Iron Flame was a pretty damn good sequel. Yes, it has its flaws but I was thoroughly entertained and would recommend it to anyone who adores dragons and all things magic.

4 STARS“Because love, at its root, is hope. Hope for tomorrow. Hope for what could be. Hope that the someone you’ve entrusted your everything to will cradle and protect it. And hope?
