The book is in two parts linked by the birth, separation and reunion of father and son. It begins in 1968. The story focuses on the lives of three main characters and spans two generations. Peter Wells, a Naval Officer destined for the highest ranks in the Royal Navy. His first marriage fails because of his ambition. Carol, his second wife, is a strong willed women ten years his junior, who falls in love with Peter despite her dislike for any form of authority. Nick Wells is a twenty year old Airline Steward. He is Peter’s son, born to his first wife and taken by her at the time of their divorce. Twenty years pass before Nick meets the father he does not know and the step-mother who he wants to know better. The story gives an insight into two glamorous careers and a number of exciting places. There is action at sea, in the air and around the world. It reflects the time in which it is set, a time of transition and excitement. It is a turbulent love story with a bitter sweet ending. Stephen Barnes grew up in Australia where his family emigrated in 1959. He served as a Naval Officer in the Royal Australian Navy for seven years. On returning to England he joined British Airways as a Cabin Crew member on long haul flights.
