Gerald Forster opens a letter that shocks him so profoundly that he suffers a fatal stroke. His life savings have been wiped out by a holiday property investment scam masterminded by James Bulstrode, a man with a profitable sideline in trafficking beautiful girls to wealthy and unscrupulous men in remote parts of the world.
