Il me faut excuser d'un titre si ambitieux et si veritablement trompeur que celui-ci. Je n'avais pas le dessein d'en imposer quand je l'ai mis sur ce petit ouvrage. Mais il y a vingt-cinq ans que je l'y ai mis, et apres ce long refroidissement, je le trouve un peu fort. Le titre avantageux serait donc adouci. Quant au texte... Mais le texte, on ne songerait meme pas a l'ecrire. Impossible! dirait maintenant la raison. Arrive a l'ennieme coup de la partie d'echecs que joue la connaissance avec l'etre, on se flatte qu'on est instruit par l'adversaire; on en prend le visage; on devient dur pour le jeune homme qu'il faut bien souffrir d'avoir comme aieul; on lui trouve des faiblesses inexplicables, qui furent ses audaces; on reconstitue sa naivete. C'est la se faire plus sot qu'on ne l'a jamais ete. Mais sot par necessite, sot par raison d'Etat!
