Special Agent Gin Reilly faces a series of murders that have no clues other than the image of a smiley face left at the scene, in one of the most difficult and dangerous cases of her career.

Special Agent Gin Reilly is settling into the FBI’s Critical Crime Unit's homicide team. Even though she and her partner had already solved several high-profile cases, the last call she was expecting was from the Domestic Terrorism Unit.

On the edge of one of the most remote forests in the country, dead bodies were being left in plain sight. And these aren’t randomly selected victims. Each one is an active member in The Heavy Boot, a survivalist group known for its violence. The CCU's domestic terrorism team was used to dealing with the activities of this group, but not with the brutal murders of its members. It was a problem they’d never faced before, so their senior agent was pulling rank and calling in favors to have Gin and her team temporarily report to him.

It came as no surprise that despite being the targets of an unknown killer, the survivalists refuse to cooperate with anyone from the FBI. But when Gin uncovers a link between the murders and a series of disappearances of young women from the surrounding towns, she and her team are no longer dealing with just the survivalists wanting her gone through any means. Now she’s drawn the attention of a killer whose murders have gone undetected for years, and who has decided that rather than simply evade the FBI, Gin and her partner would make the perfect victims.
