Description

Polly Perks is a determined young woman, driven by the need to uncover the fate of her brother, Paul. With courage that belies her modest background, she joins the ranks of the Discworld army, a decision that leads her on an unexpected journey filled with camaraderie, chaos, and self-discovery. As she navigates the challenges of military life, Polly’s tenacity shines through, showcasing her resolve to not only find her brother but also to carve out her own identity in a world often dominated by men.

In a humorous twist, Polly takes on a new persona, cutting off her signature blonde braids to fit in with her fellow soldiers. This transformation marks the beginning of a series of adventures where she confronts the absurdity of war while proving herself to be more than capable among her peers. The absurd yet richly woven tapestry of the Discworld serves as a backdrop for her story, filled with the trademark wit that fans have come to adore.

As Polly faces the rigors of military drills and the unpredictable nature of battle, she discovers the strength of friendship and the power of resilience. Her fellow soldiers, each with their own quirks and stories, add depth to her experience, turning the harsh realities of army life into moments of levity and brotherhood. Together they tackle the absurdities of their missions, often finding themselves in the most ridiculous situations that test their mettle and loyalty.

Ultimately, Polly's journey reflects not only her quest for her brother but also the exploration of gender roles within a fantastical setting. As she steps confidently into her role as a soldier, she defies expectations and challenges the norms of her society, emerging as a symbol of empowerment in a world that often underestimates her. Through laughter, courage, and a touch of magic, her story unfolds as a celebration of identity, camaraderie, and the relentless pursuit of family.

5.0

I know many see this as being one of the weaker Discworld books, but I disagree - I really enjoyed it. The best way I can describe it is being Pratchett's version ofJoan of Arc and Mulan, with plenty of satire, sarcasm and swears (honestly, I'll never not laugh at someone being called a "tit").
