Description

Ruth Jefferson has devoted over two decades of her life to the compassionate care of mothers and newborns. As a skilled labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital, she pours her heart into her work. However, Ruth's world turns upside down when a couple arrives to welcome their baby, and their prejudices lead to a life-altering incident. This shocking event shines a harsh light on the deep-rooted racism lurking just beneath the surface of society and complicates Ruth's life in ways she never imagined.

As the legal battle ensues, Ruth finds herself caught in a storm of societal judgment and personal anguish. Her dedication to her profession clashes with the barriers erected by explicit racial bias. Throughout the ordeal, Ruth must navigate her own feelings of despair and resilience, challenging not just the prejudices of others, but also her internal struggles.

Through poignant storytelling, the narrative explores themes of race, identity, and the pursuit of justice, ultimately revealing the power of human connection in the face of adversity. Ruth's journey serves as a testament to the strength it takes to stand up for oneself and the importance of compassion in a world often marked by division.

Stick with this one. There are some chapters that are tough to get through because they're from the pov of a white supremacist, but that's the point. Power through them - it's worth it in the end. This book really makes you think deeply about a topic that is still an issue in the world today.
