I just finished The Setting Sun, and honestly, it was okay at best. Nothing special, nothing surprising. People keep talking about the symbolism and deeper meaning, but I didn’t feel any of that. If it’s there, it’s too vague to matter, and I’m not going to force some grand interpretation onto a story that doesn’t earn it.Most of the book felt like a simple family story: a daughter, a sick mother, and a troubled brother. That’s fine, but the so-called bigger themes about old Japan vs. new Japan didn’t land for me at all. It felt stretched and barely connected to what was actually happening. The only part I really liked was Naoji’s letters. His voice was raw and interesting, and honestly more engaging than the rest of the book. Those pages had life. Everything else felt flat.Overall: not terrible, not great. Just an “alright” read with a few strong moments, mostly thanks to Naoji.

It took me a long time to finish. And I haven't reached the level where I can completely understand the complexity of this book and the messages it wants me to perceive.
